Q & A

Q. What if I do not like breastfeeding but prefer to pump with the breast pump?

A. That is fine. Your baby is getting the best milk whether you pump or if you bring the baby to your breast. Do not feel forced into breast-feeding if you are not comfortable with it. Many mothers pump and give their baby breast milk. You are a good mother regardless! Pump On!

Q. How soon can a baby go outside on walks?

A. Babies can go outside for daily walks by two weeks old if the weather permits; otherwise, wait a one month or so. Start with short walks and then increase to longer walks as time progress.

Q. What if my loved one does not feel comfortable holding or feeding the baby?

A. It takes some time for some men to feel comfortable with a newborn: Do not be forceful but interact with the baby around your loved one as much as possible, and soon, the fear of being around something so small will decrease. In addition, allow your loved one to help out in other ways by going to the baby store to pick-up items you need or simply ask for help instead of arguing.

Q. Do you believe in pacifiers?

A. Only for daytime use and long trips if needed. If your baby is doing well without a pacifier, do not use it. Have a cut off point where you can say no more pacifiers for the day. It is better if the baby does not use one, but not all babies are alike. We all have unique personalities! No binky wars!

Q. You said in The Baby Schedule Ruler to use A + D ointment during the day and switch to balmex or any ointment that has zinc oxide at night. What is the reason for this?

A. Babies' skin is so soft and fragile. It will become used to one particular product if you use that product every day for a long period of time, rendering that product ineffectual. Thus, it is good to change products frequently or exchange their times of use. Diapers can also be exchanged, as can daily lotions and detergents. Just do not use one particular product for months on end. Change over to other brands when you see some dryness or redness. Good luck!

Q. My baby fusses all the time when exiting the bath. What can I do to make things better?

A. Babies do not like to leave their warm baths because most times they get chills while being brought back to room temperature. You can heat up their room temperature two to three degrees higher. Further, cover your baby with two blankets as you take him or her out of the tub. Please have at least one other person with you to do the baths until you feel comfortable doing baths by yourself. Enjoy! Splash, Splash!
